French Style Wardrobe Door Makeover in Manchester – From Flat Doors to Bespoke Fitted Furniture

Introduction

This project involved transforming an existing built-in wardrobe in a master bedroom without replacing the original doors.

The client wanted a more traditional French-style appearance while keeping costs significantly lower than installing a completely new fitted wardrobe.

By modifying the existing doors, adding decorative mouldings, and applying a full paint finish, we were able to create a bespoke built-in wardrobe with a much more premium appearance.

The Challenge

The original wardrobe was functional but looked dated.

The gaps between the doors were visually noticeable, and the flat-panel design lacked character compared to modern shaker or French-style wardrobes.

The client wanted:

  • A more elegant appearance
  • Better visual balance
  • A brighter finish
  • A cost-effective alternative to replacing the entire wardrobe

The Process

Step 1 – Removing the Doors and Preparing the Workspace

The existing handles were removed and the original fixing holes were filled.

This allowed the new panel layout to be designed without being restricted by the previous handle positions.

Step 2 – Installing Decorative Mouldings

The existing wardrobe doors were transformed using decorative mouldings to create a classic French-style panel design.

Each moulding was carefully measured, cut and positioned to ensure a symmetrical layout across all doors. Great attention was given to spacing and alignment so that the finished wardrobe would have the appearance of a bespoke fitted installation.

By modifying the existing doors rather than replacing them completely, the client was able to achieve a premium look while keeping costs significantly lower than a full wardrobe replacement.

Step 3 – Surface Preparation and Priming

Following the installation of the decorative mouldings, all joints, edges and fixing points were carefully filled and sanded.

This stage is essential for creating the appearance of a single, factory-made door rather than a modified panel. Once the surface preparation was completed, a bonding primer was applied to provide a stable foundation for the final spray finish.

Careful preparation at this stage helps achieve the smooth, seamless appearance seen in the completed wardrobe.

Step 4 –HVLP Spray Finishing

Once all preparation work had been completed, the wardrobe doors were finished using an HVLP spray system.

Spray application allows for a smoother and more uniform finish compared with traditional brush or roller methods, making it particularly suitable for furniture and fitted wardrobes.

Multiple coats were applied to build durability while maintaining a refined appearance. The result was a professional eggshell finish

Step 5 – Reinstalling the Doors

With the spray finish fully cured, the doors were carefully reinstalled onto the existing wardrobe framework.

Each door was individually adjusted to achieve consistent spacing and smooth operation. Particular attention was given to alignment, ensuring that the newly added French-style mouldings lined up neatly across the wardrobe.

At this stage, the transformation was already visible, with the previously flat wardrobe doors now resembling a bespoke fitted wardrobe installation.

Step 6 – Installing New Gold Handles

The final stage was fitting a set of modern gold bar handles to complement the newly created French-style doors.

The warm metallic finish adds contrast against the white eggshell-painted surface, creating a clean and elegant appearance. The original wardrobe storage layout was fully retained, ensuring the project delivered both visual improvement and practical functionality.

The Result

The completed wardrobe now has a completely different appearance.

Rather than replacing the entire fitted wardrobe, the client achieved a bespoke French-style look at a fraction of the cost of a new installation.

The decorative panels add depth and character while maintaining the practicality of the original wardrobe structure.

Attention to Detail

Close-up views reveal the fine details that help create the bespoke appearance.

The mouldings were carefully positioned to maintain consistent spacing across all doors, while the brushed gold handles were selected to complement the clean white finish. The HVLP spray application produced a smooth and durable eggshell finish with no visible brush marks.

One of the biggest advantages of this project was that the existing fitted wardrobe carcass was retained.

By modifying the original doors rather than replacing the entire wardrobe system, the client achieved a completely new look while avoiding the cost and disruption of a full replacement.
