Transforming a Bedroom into a Bespoke Interactive Hulk-Themed Space
This project began with a fairly simple bedroom, but the brief gave us an opportunity to create something completely different.
The aim was not simply to redecorate the room or add a few LED strips. We wanted to build an immersive, interactive bedroom where the lighting, artwork, ceiling and sound could all work together as one bespoke system.
The finished room combines a custom illuminated Hulk feature, a printed sky stretch ceiling, RGBW lighting, a handmade five-button control panel, programmed lighting effects and integrated sound.
Everything was designed around the room rather than relying on an off-the-shelf lighting controller.

The Original Bedroom
Before work started, the bedroom had a neutral finish with an existing Hulk wall graphic, fitted storage and a punching bag.
The existing Hulk theme gave us the starting point, but we wanted to take it much further and create something that felt built into the room rather than simply added to it.
One of the main goals was to keep the room practical while introducing a much stronger visual feature and a simple control system that could be operated using large physical buttons.
Building the Bespoke Hulk Feature Lightbox

The first major feature was the oversized Hulk artwork.
Rather than fitting a conventional framed print, we designed and built a bespoke illuminated feature lightbox. The large printed artwork was prepared in the workshop and incorporated into a purpose-built frame with integrated lighting.
Once the unit was fabricated, it was transported to site, carefully positioned and fixed to the wall.
Testing the lighting after installation immediately changed the feel of the room. The green illumination brought the artwork to life and became the main focal point of the bedroom.

The finished feature was later connected to the custom controller so the lighting could form part of the programmed room effects rather than operating as a simple static light.
A Custom Five-Button Control Panel

A major part of this project was making the room easy and enjoyable to control.
We designed and fabricated a five-button panel using large colour-coded push buttons. The panel was built in the workshop before being installed beside the existing fitted storage.
Instead of using a phone app or complicated remote control, the room can be operated through simple physical buttons.
Different buttons can control different parts of the system, including the illuminated artwork, ceiling lighting, atmospheric effects and sound.
For example, the system can provide a calm green breathing effect on the Hulk artwork, softly fade the ceiling lighting on and off, create a warmer sunset-style atmosphere, or trigger the storm sequence.
A dedicated button can also be programmed for music and dance functions, allowing the system to be updated with a personal playlist.
Designing the Electronics Behind the Room

Behind the visible control panel is a completely custom-built electronic system.
An ESP32 microcontroller forms the centre of the installation. A dedicated control board was assembled to operate the separate lighting channels, with switching modules used to manage the higher-current RGBW lighting circuits.
Because the ceiling contains a large number of LEDs, the load was divided into separate lighting zones. This allowed the system to distribute the current more effectively while still controlling the room as one coordinated installation.
A concealed enclosure was also built beside the fitted storage to house the controller, power supplies, switching hardware and wiring.
Although this part of the project disappears once everything is finished, it was one of the most important elements in making the final room reliable and serviceable.
Programming and Workshop Testing

The interactive effects were programmed specifically for this room.
Before taking the system to site, the controller, switching circuits and LED modules were assembled and tested in the workshop.
Each output channel was checked individually before testing complete lighting sequences.
The control software was written so that the different effects could run independently rather than simply switching lights on and off in a fixed sequence.
The Hulk feature can gently breathe in green, while the ceiling lighting can be controlled separately. This allows different combinations of lighting to be used depending on the mood required.
Creating the Storm Effect
One of the most distinctive programmed effects is the storm mode.
When activated, the Hulk artwork changes to a more aggressive red-toned effect while the ceiling produces randomised lightning flashes using different combinations of white, blue, red and warm light.
Rather than repeating one simple flashing pattern, the timing and intensity are varied to make the effect feel less mechanical.
A sound module was also integrated into the system so different thunder recordings can be played at random while the lighting sequence is running.
When another mode is selected, the storm sound and lighting stop automatically.
Making the Controls Reliable
A lot of the important work happened during testing rather than in the finished photographs.
With multiple 24V LED power supplies and high-current lighting circuits operating together, electrical interference initially affected some of the low-voltage button inputs.
The solution involved improving the input filtering, refining the wiring and adding both hardware and software debounce to the push-button controls.
The system was repeatedly bench-tested before installation and then tested again under full load on site.
These are small details that are never visible once the project is complete, but they make a huge difference to how dependable a custom electronic installation feels in everyday use.
Building the Illuminated Sky Ceiling

The second major visual feature was the ceiling.
A new framework was installed to support the concealed lighting system, with multiple LED modules positioned above the finished surface to create even illumination.
Once the lighting had been tested, a custom printed sky membrane was fitted and tensioned across the ceiling.
This completely transformed the room.
With the lighting behind it, the printed clouds and blue sky gain depth and create the impression of looking upwards into an illuminated outdoor scene rather than at a conventional bedroom ceiling.
Because the ceiling is RGBW controlled, the same surface can also change character depending on the selected effect.
The Finished Interactive Bedroom

Once the Hulk feature, control system, lighting and printed ceiling were working together, the room felt completely different from where the project started.
The result is not simply a themed bedroom. It is a custom-built interactive environment where the artwork, ceiling, lighting and sound can respond to different controls and moods.
The system was deliberately designed so that the effects can continue to be adjusted after installation. Lighting levels, timings, colour combinations and sound files can all be fine-tuned depending on how the room feels during everyday use.
For us, that flexibility is an important part of bespoke work. The settings that look ideal during installation are not always the settings that the person using the room will enjoy most, so the system was designed to be adaptable rather than fixed.

A Truly Bespoke Build
This project combined several different areas of work into one installation:
custom joinery and fabrication, feature lighting, a printed stretch ceiling, electronics, low-voltage wiring, microcontroller programming, sound integration and on-site testing.
Much of what makes the room special is hidden behind the finished surfaces.
From the handmade control panel and concealed electronics to the individually programmed lighting sequences, almost every part of the system was designed specifically for this room.
It was a challenging project, but also one of the most interesting examples of what can be achieved when traditional interior work is combined with custom electronics and lighting.
